There’s so much to do round here

Discover the most perfect scenery of New Zealand. Incredible unspoilt nature with pristine white sandy beaches and breath-taking native forest.

Matarangi Beach is unmatched for all sorts of leisure and watersports whether its swimming, body surfing, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, jet skiing, water skiing and wake boarding or fishing and diving. There's an excellent boat ramp and wharf allowing easy access to the harbour and the ocean. The offshore islands of Great Mercury and Cuvier can be explored with great fishing, scallop and crayfish diving spots.

There are walkways and tracks for cycling, jogging, walking or tramping. Matarangi has several public tennis courts. At The Dunes you can play the 18-hole golf course originally designed by Bob Charles, it is certainly one of the most picturesque courses in New Zealand. There you can also enjoy The Dunes Restaurant and Bar.

Outside of Matarangi there's a huge number of activities with local tour operators. Visit the bush railway or thrill yourself zip lining through the forest over at Coromandel township, or visit Lost Springs in Whitianga where you can escape reality for a day by relaxing in the Geothermal pools, be pampered in the Day Spa or dine in the restaurant.

Walks

Rings Beach Walk and Rocks

4hrs/8.6km loop (moderate walk)

Great fishing point off the rocks on the west end of the beach. A wetland walk starts from the east end of the beach and takes you through a few hills before reaching the wetlands where many different species of birds nest. More that 4,000 trees and plants of different species have been planted since 2015. The loop track takes you back to Matarangi over the hill.

Matarangi Beach and Spit Walk

45min /4km  (easy walk)

The beach stretches 4.5km and offers a picture-perfect white sandy beach. There are only a handful of north facing beaches in New Zealand. Matarangi with its straight coastline is one of them. It is unique because it receives all day sun throughout the seasons.

Matarangi is also a major breeding area for the endangered New Zealand Dotterel. The breeding starts in September and continues to March. At different times of the year, Matarangi hosts birds such as Bar-tailed Godwits, Variable and South Island Pied Oyster Catchers, Wrybills, Golden Plovers, Caspan Terns and Banded Dotterel.
